Classes & Descriptions

Introduction to pro tools teaches the student the correct way to set up your pro tools files and file management of pro tools. The number one reason for bad sounding pro tools work is corrected in these 4 classes. The student will use all the pro tools “tools” and familiarize themselves with the correct way to use pro tools. By the end of this set of classes, you will know how to set up and use pro tools.

Advanced Pro Tools Recording

Class Set: 2

Advanced recording pro tools techniques. The student will be recording files to pro tools in the “Red Room” with our instructor. Important techniques such as “punching in and out”, editing, cross fading, consolidation, and navigation within pro tools are all covered in this class set. By the end of this set of 4 classes, you will know the ins and outs of the navigation techniques and tools within the pro tools program.

Audio Engineering Intro

Class Set: 3

This class set teaches the student EQ, compression, reverb, delay times, all the skills anyone using pro tools must know. The basics of engineering music are taught in this set of 4 classes. By the end of this set of 4 classes, the student will be using EQ and compression as well as mixing songs assigned to the student using all of the knowledge taught in this class set. An amazing class for all aspiring engineers.

Advanced Audio Engineering

Class Set: 4

Advanced Audio Engineering is the point in our sets of classes where it all starts to come together. In this class set we work on line automation of effects and proper uses of automating effects. We teach you elaborate ways to improve the overall sound of your mixes. You will also prepare for vocal production classes by learning how a professional recording studio is set up and how to trace lines, signal path, and flow. Headphone mixing, mic technique, mixing techniques are all included in this set of 4 classes. By the end of this set of classes, you will know how to work in a real studio and apply your knowledge to your own studio.

Vocal Production Lab Set

Class Set: 5

Vocal production Lab Set is a series of 3 Classes. Some students take this set of classes twice or ad additional Vocal Production Labs as they become more successful in their work with vocalists. We provide vocalists or the student can find the vocalist. By the end of this class set the student will know how to properly work with a vocalist. We find that most students need additional Vocal Production Labs.

EQ/Compression Classes

EQ Compression classes consist of the student working with live and prerecorded music. The student will learn the theory of equalization, compression, and the sound of what they contribute and take away from a specific instrument such as bass drum, snare drum, vocals, and backing vocals. Compression and equalization are the two most commonly used processing choices by top engineers and 99% of engineers know nothing about either. Some students take this class set two times. By the end of these classes the student will be familiar with the theory and sound of both compression and equalization.

Mixing Class

Mixing class consists of 8 classes focusing on the ways to blend, equalize, compress, automate, bus and mix all kinds of music. The student will be mixing in all three studios and assigned different sessions to mix for the instructor. The student will be allowed to mix his or her’s own music should it be individually “tracked out” in pro tools. By the end of these classes the student will be able to mix all kinds of music using the correct equalization, compression, reverb, delay as well as output songs by correct industry standard levels.

Session Simulation

This class is unique to COMIA. We take a band or solo artist and place them in the studio to work with the student recording a song from start to finish. COMIA students like this class so much that they take it several times. The student will have to know the entire Studio A “set up” prior to the start of this class set. The student will have the instructor there to assist only. By the end of this class, the student will have learned the art of recording an artist.

Music Business Intro

This class teaches the student the origin of the music industry, how it works, and the “flow of income” from all sources within the music industry. This set of 4 classes is very fast paced and informative. Upon completion the student will be familiar of all sources of income, how artists are paid royalties, what royalties are paid by the appropriate collection agencies or record labels.

Music Business Advanced

The advanced music business class teaches the student how to register for all collection agencies for royalties, how to collect from song writing, the basics of a standard recording contract, management contract, and licensing contracts. This class is necessary for any producer that wants to make money in the music business. By the end of this class set, the student will have a knowledge of all aspects of how the music business works.

Contracts & Negotiations

COMIA is famous for our business classes and this class is one of the reasons. COMIA owns two full service record labels. Contracts and negotiating is a weekly event at the COMIA building. The student will learn the entire structure of contracts and negotiations of recording deals, production deals, publishing deals and how the contracts are structured. The student will also learn the latest 2012 contract structures. Most all other schools have to follow some old out dated structure due to University based “red-tape.” At COMIA, the student is learning the very latest contracts used for producer, artists and songwriters. By the end of this class, the student will learn how to negotiate a recording contract and other standard industry contracts.

Publishings

Publishing is where the most money is made. It is at the core of all negotiation. This set of 3 classes is an overview of how publishing works and how to register as a songwriter. By the end of this class, the student will know the basics of publishing and how to make money with publishing.

Music Management

A great deal of aspiring managers are not aware of the complexity of music management. This class set will prepare the student as to the duties, percentages and income sources for music management. Many artists are now acting as their own managers during the first few years of their careers. By the end of this set of classes, the student will have a much better knowledge as to how to administer aspects of music management.
